What It's Like

To the west of the Old Center, Jordaan is the funky, young, and up-and-coming neighborhood of Amsterdam (similar to the Latin Quarter in Montreal or New York's East Village). Formerly an industrial area inhabited by working-class families, today Jordaan has become a hip, fashionable spot. There are several extended shopping streets, where students -- and professionals -- can be found strolling, and a recent influx of restaurants and bars has given the neighborhood an upscale vibe. However, homage to Jordaan's humble roots remains with statues to former "folk heroes" dotting the area.

Where To Stay

Jordaan is a fun place to visit by day -- or by night -- but not a great place to stay. It's relatively secluded from the main tourist attractions, with few museums or historic sights of its own, and there are very few lodging options in the area. If you do choose to stay in Jordaan, it is best to stay towards the south end, which is closer to the action.
